Company

I couldn’t sleep that night
I was
Tired.
Ages old-
Stuffed by decades.
I had melted into the
yellows
And purples of yesterday-
I was
Tired.

But I knew that
I would never see
you
again.

I might see the back of your head,
Or a leg or an eyelash
Darting down a congested supermarket aisle
Or pulling away from a blurred stoplight.

But I would never see you again.

I am still here.
Just in
case.
